Voices in the Void: Finding Faith in the Shadows of Sci-Fi

When the screen goes dark and the credits roll, sometimes what lingers isn’t just the story, it’s the questions it stirs. Science fiction isn’t shy about asking big questions:

What’s real? What’s true? Where do we find hope in a broken world?

That’s the heart of Voices in the Void: A 7-Day Sci-Fi Devotional. Through the worlds of Stranger Things, The Mandalorian, The Hunger Games, Black Mirror, and Attack on Titan, this devotional explores how stories of fear, courage, and sacrifice echo eternal truths in Scripture.

Here are a few highlights from the journey:

The Upside Down and the Armor of God (Stranger Things)

Voices in the Void Chapter 1

Evil often hides beneath the surface, unseen but always real. Scripture reminds us that our struggle is not against flesh and blood. Even the most broken person was still created in the image of God. Yes, even Will. Not because God made them evil, but because sin twists the choices they make. That’s why the “armor of God” isn’t spiritual cosplay, it’s survival gear. Without it, you won’t last. You might be standing physically at first, but spiritually, you’ll fall without it.

This is the Way (The Mandalorian)

Voices in the Void Chapter 2

Faith isn’t about having all the answers. It’s trusting the One who does. Like Din Djarin, we often take steps forward before we fully understand the path. And in truth, we practice this kind of faith every day, whether we realize it or not. Employees trust their leaders to keep the business running. We trust that a chair will hold us, that transportation will get us to our destination safely, that technology will connect us. How much more, then, should we trust the One who holds the universe in His hands? This is the Way.

Fire in the Rebellion (The Hunger Games)

Voices in the Void Chapter 3

Hope doesn’t ignite with hype, slogans, or clever marketing. True hope begins with love, sacrifice, and endurance, things only God can fuel. The hope Christ gives doesn’t just sustain; it transforms. It brings joy that the world cannot manufacture. None of us like suffering, but when we choose to love like Christ in the midst of it, we discover hope that outlasts the fire.

Reflections in the Black Mirror (Black Mirror)

Voices in the Void Chapter 4

Technology lures us with filters, edits, and illusions of perfection. But Romans 12:2 calls us not to conformity, but to transformation. The promises of tech—happiness, wealth, popularity—are only shadows. The reality is this: God made you, He knows you better than you know yourself, and your identity in Him provides everything your soul is searching for. Don’t settle for the reflection, live in the reality.

Titans at the Gate (Attack on Titan)

Voices in the Void Chapter 5

Fear often towers over us, larger than life. Yet Joshua 1:9 reminds us that we never face it alone: “The Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” If you are walking in God’s will, you’ve prepared, prayed, and stood firm, then when fear threatens, keep standing. The battle may rage, but the presence of God is your strength at the gate.

From Shadows to Light

When you step back, the flow of these stories becomes clear. Stranger Things reminds us evil is real and must be faced. The Mandalorian shows us the way forward is trust. The Hunger Games teaches that hope is born in sacrifice. Black Mirror warns us not to lose our true identity in illusions. And Attack on Titan declares that even in the shadow of fear, God’s presence is our strength. Yes, these stories are for different universes, but the gospel is clear that Jesus is, the armor, the path, the hope, the reality, and the strength. The gospel speaks louder than the void. If you listen, you’ll hear Jesus.
